Young’s Swim School offers a structured range of classes, that cater for the needs of infants and first time swimmers, through to preparation for competitive club level swimming. Below is a listing and explanation of the available classes.

Infants (Parents & Bubs) Infants are accompanied by a parent/carer in this class. This class aims to achieve water familiarization through fun activities. Children learn to put their face in the water, to enter and exit the water safely, float and kick on their back with help, and to submerge with confidence. The “Return to the Edge” concept is also introduced in this class.

Penguins In this class, children gain water confidence, learn to put their face into the water and blow bubbles, jump/dive into the water with help, enter and exit the water safely, use the kickboard with help, swim 1 metre front streamline with help, float/kick on their back with help, jump into the water and return to the edge of the pool with help.

Seahorses This class is for children still gaining water-confidence. In this class, children learn to enter and exit the water safely, use kickboard for 3 metres with help, swim a front streamline for 3 metres with help, carry out breathing drill with a kickboard, float/kick on their back for 3 metres with help, and to jump into the water and return to the edge of the pool unaided.

Starfish In this class children learn to use a kickboard unaided for 7 metres, swim a front streamline for 3 metres unaided, arm & breathing drills with a kickboard, swim independently freestyle and backstroke for 7 metres, and dive into the water unaided.

|
Angelfish In this class children are water confident and are using a kickboard and completing arm & breathing drills with a kickboard unaided. Swim independently freestyle and backstroke for 15 metres, kick on their back unaided, and dive into the water unaided.

|
Swordfish In this class children swim independently freestyle and backstroke for 30 metres, and dive into the water unaided. Bi-lateral breathing for freestyle is introduced now, along with breaststroke kick, and the child needs to be able to carry out the correct technique for breaststroke kick before upgrading to the next level.

Dolphins In this class children swim independently freestyle and backstroke for 60 metres using good technique. We now see the introduction of the arms for breaststroke, and the child becoming confident at swimming 15 metres of breaststroke, using the correct pull & timing. They are also introduced to butterfly, with the aid of flippers. The children are taught freestyle and backstroke tumble turns.

Squad 1 In this class children carry out correct kicking in all four swimming strokes. They can swim freestyle and backstroke confidently for 120 metres, and swim breaststroke correctly for 60 metres. They will be learning swimming drills in all four strokes, and be competent at diving and tumble turns. Technique is still a major factor in this squad.

Squad 2 This class prepares young swimmers for club level training. It is a high intensity squad, working endurance whilst maintaining good technique. This squad is designed for the swimmer who wishes to maintain their swimming skills and is not interested in becoming a club member involved in competitive swimming. Young’s Swim School recommends the Woden Swim Club for those swimmers who aspire to competitive swimming or who wish to further their proficiency and fitness.
